In this photo, Florence is sitting in a wicker chair. She has on a necklace and a ring on her right ring finger and appears to hold a photo frame with her right hand. An interpretation of the placement of the ring is: The left hand is typically reserved for engagement and wedding rings, wearing a ring on the right hand can sometimes signify a relationship status. It may be where you choose to wear a 'promise ring', a ring to indicate that you are in a committed relationship but not married or engaged.

Frances was close to her Aunt Muriel Leonhardt and she inscribed the photo as:

Lots of Love to Aunt Muriel
12/15/21

On the back, her mother Margaret Jane Graham, wife of Robert A. Graham wrote:
Frances Florence Jordan
(engaged)

La Fayette Ave, or Lafayette Avenue is perpendicular to W. Marquette Rd and is now near the I-94 South Expressway. The location is very close to their previous 50 W. Marquette Rd location.

The key as to why I labeled this photo as an Engagement Portrait was the labeling by Frances’ mother on the back indicating engaged. However, it is not known whether the 12/15/21 labeling indicated the date her future husband Ernest Hollingshead proposed with the ring or whether that is the date Florence sent the photo to her Aunt Muriel. It is also unusual that Florence’s sent the photo with the inscription on the front to Aunt Muriel, but her mother wrote on the back to send the photo back. Of note, the descendants of Aunt Muriel have the original photo so the photo stayed with Aunt Muriel.

The Leonhardt family sent this Xerox photo to Dave Jordan in the late 1980s. Muriel Leonhardt was Margaret Jordan Graham's sister.

If you would like to add information about this photo, please contact Dave Jordan. Margaret Knowles Jordan Graham was his g-grandmother and Frances Florence Jordan Hollinshead was his great-aunt. The Picture Reference Number is 19211215a1.
